Classic. Elegant. Timeless. The bride dressed in all white matches her beautiful flowers, all adorned in white. These ones have flowers at all stages of bloom which not only shows the transformation and growth of the flower, but that of your love as well. You can never go wrong with an all white bouquet.

3) Leafy Bouquet

Sometimes we all need a pop of color and with this leafy bouquet, it’s the perfect amount thats not too loud and just subtle enough. Why it pays to hire from a wedding service and not CL

It’s a recession, we are in it together and weddings will always happen. The only difference is, more budget-conscious weddings happen and that’s perfectly fine. I think nearly every vendor offers great deals right now, it does not hurt to ask. But it’s where you ask that is key!

I write about this to remind couples that there are plenty of photography ads on websites like Craigslist. Lets keep CL to concert tickets, handy men and roommates but your wedding should be handled my professionals. In fact I live near 2 universities, one is a prestigious university with priviliged students and another an art school. Not taking anything out of the creative talents of these kids, but there is so much more that goes into a wedding shoot and it takes more than a set of parents that purchased their kid a nice camera.

There are a large number of people selling photography services. Generally if they are not with wedding portals (ie weddingcompass), they are probably new. It’s your wedding. They are new. Lets do the math here. It does not add up to me.

Let me give you an example here. My cousin, a very talented musician, wanted to purchase a DSLR camera to make extra money on the side doing weddings by putting ads on Craigslist for cheap wedding photography. What!? Seriously!? I had to sit him down and tell him about the seriousness of such an endeavor.

I told him these are real people trusting you with their most important event, and that it ought to be taken with the utmost level of respect and professional demeanor. Wedding photography is not about taking an expensive camera, aiming and shooting.

It is about how you carry yourself during a very fast paced and stressful event. It’s about not missing a single important moment, like the bride walking down the aisle, first dance, first kiss, cake cutting, and the list goes on and on…. While not ideal there are many weddings that do not have a planner and the photographer takes charge of the event’s flow. This takes years of experience.

Brides need to understand that it takes a great deal of work to bring two families together after the ceremony, get all of the photos the couple want, doing it grace and tact, and making sure each photo is perfect. That requires years of experience, mastering the camera and its settings. It takes years of wedding experience to work fluidly with with other vendors, and about a dozen other resposibilites all at once. How could you think about telling a couple you are qualified to photograph their wedding!?

He did not know about all of the responsiblities related to the job, but what he told me was horrible. He said lots of his friends do that. They put up flyers and ads on CL, ask for a few hundred dollars and photograph the weddings.

My best advice to brides: PLEASE go with a professional wedding portal like WeddingCompass.com, they do the job of making sure vendors are qualified with good reviews, years of experience and hold us to standards. That’s who should be photographing your wedding, not people in it for a few bucks.

If it’s a matter of cost, ask the photographers you are interviewing. Most will offer some great pricing, because as we said before; we are all in this recession together. There are deals out there, just ask!

All Dressed in….Not White?

Here come’s the bride, all dressed in white…well, what if she wasn’t dressed in all white? Traditional white wedding dress has marked its place in the wedding world as the only, mainly only, color of wedding dresses brides flock to, well, Vera Wang, and other designers, are spicing things up a bit and changing the color pallet. It’s a little different, it’s a little out there, but photographically speaking, it’s definitely different and it can tell a different story.

Now, on first glance these dresses do look completely different than more traditional wedding dresses but if you keep looking, the only different is the color. The silhouette of the dresses are all conventional and very much what we’re used to. Grab a wedding album or magazine and flip through it and you’ll see the same shapes. The colors definitely make it pop and if you’re that bride looking for that extra kick or maybe just another thing to set you apart, well, look no further.

While black is darker in both color and mood, just imagine these photographs in a photo book. Looking back in 10 years and seeing this will just show how much of a risk taker you were and how good you looked doing it. At the end of the day, it is YOUR wedding, and you should do whatever makes you happy and whatever makes you feel good. Wear that black gown and marry happily.

Wedding Coffee Table Book? Yes!

I’m a huge fan of coffee table books, the high quality kind. I am talking about the ones you get at Barnes and Noble, Book Soup, or Hennessy and Ingalls in Santa Monica, CA. In my living room I am lucky enough to see two views that I love:

1) The first being an amazing NY Style view of Downtown Los Angeles
2) The second is not one stack but many stacks of coffee table books.

I have books on Mario Testino, Iran, Afghanistan, Voyeurism (I didn’t buy this one!), to books on Orange County before and after. I sit on them, I put them on my coffee table, I put them by my windows, besides the bed, end of the kitchen counter, etc… They are the best, they NEVER EVER go out of style and they last forever.

That is why I offer them exclusively for my wedding clientele. My couples embrace a certain era where style was simple (like the 1960′s) and they love art. They are understated and simply elegant.

My coffee table books are exactly that, and it’s a perfect match for them. They hold about 100 pages, very large format and even pocket-sized books. Their paper construction is thick, sometimes higher quality than what you would find in the store. Each is bound perfectly, and when it arrives they actually take my breath away. Sometimes I love them so much, that I order a set for myself and not for showcasing but because I put so much work into each one…they are art to me.

Each book is different, because each story is different. Some have 40 pages and 100 images, some have 100 pages and nearly 700 images. Some pages are full bleed, while others are a sophisticated collage of their wedding story.

Here is what Hans had to say about their story:

They met at Comic-Con 2009 at the Radical Publishing booth. Hans was working the booth while Lisa waited patiently for Gene and Nick Simmon’s autograph. The autograph wasn’t the only thing she got, they exchanged numbers (she came back to the booth more than once that day) and have stayed in touch ever since that date. On March 26th, 2011 Hans finally proposed to Lisa on a small beach across the SD Convention Center, during a small picnic (their no quick no-stress getaway trip). Hans couldn’t think of a better way and time to propose and the rest is history.

Dani and Armando’s Story

Here is what Dani said about their story:

Dani and Armando

They met 7 years ago when Dani would visit her friend in Torrance, CA. (she lived in Santa Clarita, CA) and it was during one of the visits that she met her future husband. Dani describes it as love-at-first-sight and was instantly attracted to his charm and humorous personality. Her and Armando exchanged numbers and kept in touch during each of their senior years.

Armando finally popped the question by the same lifeguard station in Hermosa Beach where they shard their first kiss, and the same spot he asked her to be his GF. I could try to paraphrase it but I think Dani said it best, “I dropped my things in the sand and fell to my knees with him and couldn’t stop crying with joy. It was my princess moment I had been waiting for all of my life.”.

Dani wrote a beautiful description. She’s a great writer, but we had to condense her story by A LOT to keep them all the same length. Trust me, it’s a very romantic story.
